AMATYC Virtual Traveling Workshop on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
MichMATYC has been awarded an AMATYC Virtual Traveling Workshop this year! The virtual workshop topic is on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and scheduled for Friday, October 16 from 1:00-3:00 pm Eastern. You can register for the AMATYC Virtual Traveling Workshop using the link http://bit.ly/MichMATYCworkshop.
We are also excited to announce that the virtual workshop facilitator is Dr. Ann Sitomer from the STEM Research Center at Oregon State University. Ann brings 25 years of experience teaching introductory mathematics, particularly in the community college setting. Ann also is the current chair of the AMATYC Research in Mathematics Education for Two-Year Colleges (RMETYC) Committee.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) include self-awareness, emotional awareness, and the breakdown of bias and prejudices important for challenging deeply held assumptions, perspectives, and beliefs that continue to produce inequitable outcomes for students in mathematics courses. This AMATYC Virtual Traveling Workshop will present clear and concrete definitions and explanations of DEI to ensure that all faculty have the foundational knowledge necessary to support continued learning and development; provide resources and training that designs an equitable classroom for all students; and adopt reflective strategies that can be used to change how we see our work within mathematics education.
